We started the project working closely with tutor Jamie Winchester who engaged with young people across Newport. The participants gained various Level 1 accreditations, successfully organised their own showcase events and contributed to the wider community, through participating in locally run events. These accredited sessions offered a variety of accredited courses including DJing, song writing, MCing, lyric writing, sound engineering, beat making, stage production, lighting and sound and event promotion. The showcase organised by the participants included utilising empty shops in the centre of Newport. They organised this in partnership with Urban-circle, a local youth group and performed their own work with their peers and wider community including family members and friends.
In the 2nd and 3rd years, we expanded our project, to deliver in key areas of South Wales including Newport, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil, Swansea and Bridgend, directly responding to consultation. We worked in partnership with organisations including Bettws Communities First and the Aspire project based in Ringland Youth club to support young people who were referred to the scheme via our Communities First partner.
We also delivered rhythm, music tech & DJ workshops in Caerphilly with the ‘Include’ program which was established to support young people with Special Educational Needs and those with behavioural and social difficulties. Over the academic year the young people worked towards gaining accreditation and returning to mainstream post-16 education, training or employment. We delivered similar projects in Blaenau Gwent, working with Barnardo’s and Youth Services where we delivered song writing sessions which led towards a final recording and taking a group of young people from the Lift project to Cardiff to record a song in a live studio.
